nightclubbing, queremos algo, aunque una nube negra acompañe todo lo que hacemos, podremos bailar como Iggy Pop. "The Idiot", debut como solista, escrito y muy bien dirigido junto a/por David Bowie, introduce un trabajo coherente que, pese a ser una impersonización del artista muy Bowiesquematizada (¿acaso alguien podría molestarse por eso?), logra ahuyentar la fiereza de sus días con The Stooges y aplacar sus remolinos primitivos en un regreso ambientado por una misteriosa desolación; en "Baby", deja un poco de lado al hombre que quería ser perro, para rogar por algo más de limpieza ("Baby you're so clean, Baby please stay clean") aunque esta no suela aparecer, pues en este encuentro autoexploratorio, la suciedad ya ha dejado taponadas todas las salidas. "Tiny Girls" responde al porqué le resulta tan difícil creer, ("When you only want just a tiny girl, And you hope she'll sing...And you hope she'll sing, But she sings of greed").

"The Idiot" tuvo un rol decisivo en la suerte de Ian Curtis, como es reflejado en el biopic de Anton Corbijn "Control", sobre el curso sombrío que tomara la vida del cantante de Joy Division. El tema que cierra el disco, "Mass Production", despide un último clamor, un aullido que arranca la más bella súplica ("Before you go, Do me a favour, Give me a number, Of a girl almost like you"), pasa por la más irrompible desesperanza (Though I try to die, You put me back on the line"), y termina en un misterio abrumador.

"The Idiot", puesto en escena, es una declaración introspectiva, sónica y experimental, que aunque desenpolvada de manera mórbida, pone en evidencia una etapa crítica en la vida de un artista, cuyas emociones jamás terminan por concluir.
